Braided Sourdough Loaf with Herbs





Ingredients:


For the Dough:

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water

  • 4 cups bread flour

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil


For the Herb Topping:

  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, or parsley), finely chopped

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Sea salt for sprinkling


Instructions:


1. Make the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm water, bread flour, salt, and olive oil.

  • Knead the dough on a floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise at room temperature for 4-8 hours or until doubled in size.


2. Shape the Loaf:

  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and divide it into three equal parts.

  • Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.

  • Place the braided loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet.


3. Final Rise:

  • Cover the loaf and let it rise for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.


4. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).


5. Prepare the Herb Topping:

  • Mix the chopped herbs with olive oil.


6. Brush and Bake:

  • Brush the risen loaf with the herb and olive oil mixture.

  • Sprinkle sea salt over the top.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.


7. Cool and Enjoy:

  • Allow the braided sourdough French loaf to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

  • Enjoy the aroma of fresh herbs as you savor each delicious, flavorful bite.
